An exhibition at the Royal Armouries in Leeds exploring what lies behind the desire to decorate firearms. Guns have been embellished and intricately decorated for centuries. Some are now considered objects of rare craft and artistic beauty, whilst others are gaudy projections of pomp, power or prestige.
Their decoration is loaded with symbolism and meaning, mostly revolving around notions of influence, status, control and desire.
Our design seeks to express this pomp and gaudiness, showcasing the guns in the context of materialistic desire. The gallery is wrapped in a bespoke wallpaper design full of graphic symbolism with specially designed icons fabricated in neon, hanging in the space. The guns are the stars, displayed with a nod to an expensive retail environment. Interpretation is provided in the form of printed catalogues, styled as expensive magazine brochures. The project was designed and installed within four months.
