About us

We are a Manchester-based graphic design studio with a focus on design for cultural heritage, narrative experience, interpretation design and architecture. We create meaningful and original museum galleries, exhibitions, visual identities, wayfinding and signage.

Our work is often funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and we and have a successful track-record across both the development and the delivery stage, for projects ranging in value from £10,000 to upwards of £4m.

In all our work we seek to create inventive and engaging ways of communicating messages and experiences. We believe content and form are intrinsically linked and that the very best designs are borne out of collaborative partnerships sharing common goals and aspirations.

David Sudlow

David draws on 16 years’ experience as a graphic designer with a successful track-record creating narrative-led, inventive and engaging museum galleries, exhibitions, architectural graphics and interpretation design schemes.

He has created award-winning projects for clients across cultural and commercial sectors and has taught graphic design at degree level in the UK and internationally.

Between 2004 and 2007 he worked with Ralph Appelbaum Associates at their London studio, cutting his teeth designing the permanent galleries at the London Transport Museum. In 2007 he joined Nick Bell Design, where he spent five years working on commissions across the UK, in Russia and the USA. Clients included the Science Museum Group, Manchester Museum, Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, Rio Tinto, Benjamin Franklin Museum, Horus, National Trust and Natural History Museum. In 2012 he moved from London to Manchester, working first as a freelance designer before founding David Sudlow Designers in 2014. He has worked in partnership with Simon Leach Design since 2012.

David was born in London and studied Graphic Design at the London College of Printing and Communication Design at the Royal College of Art. He has a first-class BA (Hons.) degree in Typo/Graphic & Media Design and an MA in Communication Design. He is a member of the Museums Association.
Richard Heap

Richard joined in 2018, working first as a freelance designer on special projects before becoming full-time. He has 15 years’ experience across advertising, exhibition design, brand and campaign design, working both ‘client-side’ and in creative agencies.

Between 2005 and 2010 Richard worked for the British Council where he helped develop their global offer in higher education, redeveloping the brand and clarifying their tone of voice. He was responsible for commissioning design projects and overseeing campaign deliveries.

It was during this time that he developed an appreciation of design effectiveness and also a keen interest in typography, lettering and packaging design, which ultimately led to him leaving the British Council to become a graphic designer.

Between 2012 and 2015 Richard worked at Studio Domus Architects in Guatemala City, helping the practice grow to become one of the leading architectural design agencies in the region. On his return to the UK, he worked for a number of creative agencies specialising in communication design for brand strategy, marketing, art direction and print. Richard is now key member of our team, working closely with key clients and project partners.

Richard holds a BA (Hons.) in Politics and International Relations from The University of Lancaster. He pursues a number of personal projects alongside his professional practice, including Label Hop and the Guatemalan Type Project.
